Massive Power Outage Hits Prague
Prague was without power for almost an hour on June 2nd, 2022. The outage was a result of a failure at the Chodov power central distribution centre, where a similar outage occurred in 2017.
The outage affected central Prague along with the city’s 5th, 10th, and 4th districts. The city’s C line metro line was also disrupted, with reports of trams stopping in the middle of intersections.
Prague’s fire departments commented that it responded to numerous reports of fire after smoke was seen coming from buildings. However, in all cases, the smoke was the result of diesel generators being turned on to provide backup power in those buildings. The media reported an estimated 800,000 people were without power for up to an hour during the outage.
PRONIX is pleased to announce that during the blackout that affected Prague, hundreds of critical applications were protected by UPS backup sources, motor generators and DUPS that PRONIX supplied and installed. During the outage, they provided an emergency source of electrical power that allowed these applications to run safely before grid power could be restored. Critical loads in the Czech colocation data center TTC TELEPORT were specifically protected by the truly modular Centiel CumulusPowerTM UPS system from the Swiss manufacturer Centiel.
Approximately 60% of all Czech internet traffic originates in TTC TELEPORT datacentres which are some of the most modern facilities of this type in Europe. Companies from all over the world host their data with TTC TELEPORT, which offers a wholly independent datacentre service based on 20 years’ experience.
TTC TELEPORT’s electrical power substation: Module 2, is protected by 6 x CumulusPowerTM 300kW frames populated with 12 x 60kW Intelligent UPS Modules (IM) and 1 x CumulusPowerTM 300kW frame populated with 3 x 50kW IM. These units support the IT and control and monitoring elements of the datacentre.
Electrical power substation: Module 6, is protected by 3 x CumulusPowerTM 300kW frames populated with 15 x 60kW IM have been installed alongside 1 x CumulusPowerTM 300kW frame populated with 3 x 50kW IM. CENTIEL, with its local partner, also provides full service and warranty support for the UPS solutions installed. Four 1,600kVA FG Wilson by Caterpillar (NI) Ltd. motor generators back up the high demands for power to the entire facility.
Whilst the media reported an estimated 800,000 people were without power for up to an hour during the outage, TTC TELEPORT reported no interruptions to power and zero downtime.
